French painter and printmaker who painted both landscapes and portraits. He worked in techniques such as pastels, lithography, watercolor, chalk, oil painting and etching. He was best known for his elegant portraits of young women.

His father, John Chaplin (1787-1849), was an art broker from England. His mother, Olympe Adelle Moisy (1790-1869), was French.

He was married on 21 Jun 1862 to Marie Antoinette Jeanne Ruttre (1841-1920), with whom he had issue.
