Census records indicate that Ralph Carter was born to Thomas and Jemima Carter on June 10, 1880. Although census records cannot normally be considered reliable in estimating birth dates, when a birth occurs just ahead of a census being performed (in the same year or even same month of census survey), additional detail is often provided on the census record which increases reliability of the information.
Apparently Ralph died about two months after birth. The August 4 date was an entry based upon the person who took the photo and who was likely able to decipher the August 4 date from the marker in-person. Incidentally, this person was able to correctly read the June 10 birth date as well. As the current contributor managing this memorial, I cannot read the August 4 date from the photo but have left the entry as the likely date of death.
