OSBORN.--On Sunday morning, December 3rd, memorial services for Dr. Albert Osborn were held in the Washington Grove Methodist Church. A week prior, plans had been made for his birthday observance at this time, but due to his death just four days before his 95th birthday, plans were changed. Mr. Everett Bean, superintendent of the Sunday School, presided, with Dr. William L. Darby and Dr. Paul F. Douglas of American University, as speakers. There was special music by a girls' double quartet from American University. Dr. Osborn was believed to be the oldest living graduate of Cornell University, from which he graduated in 1872. He came from New York State 51 years ago when he joined Bishop John Fletcher Hurst in founding American University. He served as secretary of the university from 1891 until his retirement in 1937. After retiring from active work Dr. Osborn continued to serve the university, acting as historian and working in his home on a forthcoming volume of the school's history. Funeral services were conducted at the Gartner Funeral Home in Gaithersburg on Friday by Rev. Royal A. Rice with brief messages being given by Dr. Paul Douglas, president of American University, Dr. Ralph Smith, District Superintendent of the Methodist Church, and Dr. John R. Edwards, associate pastor of Foundry Church. Interment was in Forest Oak Cemetery in Gaithersburg.
