P. K. BEARD DIES TODAY
PIONEER CARTHAGE CITIZEN PASSES AWAY AT HIS HOME

Came Here in 1867 and Has Since Been Identified With City's History - Was Prominent Mason

P. K. Beard, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Carthage, died of dropsy and old age at 6:15 o'clock this morning at his home on the corner of Central avenue and Meridian street, after an illness of several months duration.
Since last July Mr. Beard has been confined to his bed, having had a stroke of paralysis at that time. About two and one-half months ago he was also taken with dropsy, and had been more seriously sick since that time.
The deceased was born in Green county, Ohio August 23, 1827 which would have made him 81 years old, had he lived a few months longer. He remained in that county until his early manhood, when he removed to LaPorte, Indiana. Here he was married to Miss Ann Eason, who lived for about five or six years. After the death of his wife he moved to Iowa. In 1855 he married Miss Evelyn Eason, a sister of his first wife, in LaPorte, Indiana.
During the war of the rebellion Mr. Beard enlisted in the army, but his regiment was not called out for service. In 1867 he removed to Carthage where he has since resided. For a short time after coming to this city he lived on a farm with his father, but later started a boot and shoe business which he conducted until about 30 years ago, when he started the city scales. About eight years ago he retired from active business on account of poor health, and since that time the scales business has been conducted by his son.

Prominent in Masonic Order
Mr. Beard was a prominent member of the Masonic lodge, having joined that order shortly after it was organized in this city. For several years he held the office of worshipful master in the lodge. Besides having been prominent in this organization, he was always been active in the city's affairs and formed a wide circle of friends.
Of the seven children which were born to him, only two are living, both of whom reside in this city. They are Fred Beard and Mrs. B. B. Clark. Besides being survived by his second wife, he leaves a number of grandchildren and one adopted daughter, Miss Edna Beard, who is a teacher in the Joplin Public Schools,
the funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 at the family residence, the Masons being in charge.
Burial will follow in Park Cemetery.
