Gertrude Mae Tidwell Smith was born January 6, 1920 to Clarence and Lucy (Lewis) Tidwell. She grew up near Burlington, Oklahoma and attended school in Burlington all twelve years. While in Burlington she was a member of the Bethel Friends Church. It was at this little church she accepted Christ at a Sunday evening young people's meeting.

In 1940, she married Russell Smith (J.R.) and moved seven miles from home to a farm near Capron, Oklahoma. In 1954 they sold their farm and moved near Duquoin, Kansas where she diligently worked side by side with her husband farming and helping feed cattle. In 1977 they moved into Harper where they faithfully attended the Harper United Methodist Church. Gertrude and Russell will always be known for their skill in farming and their generosity to others, especially the education of young people.

Gertrude belonged to the Friday Afternoon Club and for awhile, the E.H.U. She was a member of the Friends Church in Alva, Oklahoma.

On Monday, January 5, 2009, she joined her husband, Russell; sisters, Iva Prewett and Ruby Jones; and brother, Walter Tidwell, in Heaven.

She will be missed by several nieces and nephews and many friends.
