Farmer Dies When Train Hits Truck

An elderly Webster County farmer died instantly late this morning when his pickup truck was hit by a train in Northview.

He was Holland Brooks, 80, of Northview.

Mr. Brooks was reportedly driving his pickup truck on Webster County B in Northview and failed to see an approaching Frisco freight train, about 11 a.m. Death came from multiple injuries.

The engineer Millard Morrow, 51, of 1902 Ventura, who reported that Mr. Brooks "just kept driving slowly and never did stop," was unable to halt the train and the engine struck the vehicle just as it came onto the crossing.

The site of the accident is known as "Moore's Crossing."

Mr. Brooks lived with his wife, Anna, on a 100-acre farm at the edge of Northview, and had never retired from his occupation. Friends reported he "drove around a lot, but always drove slowly." He had lived in Northview for about 35 years.

Barber-Edwards Funeral Home of Marshfield is in charge of arrangements.
