Marie Angela Salazar Martinez - Age 53 - Española - 10-29-2009 - Updated Mass Time

MARIE ANGELA SALAZAR MARTINEZ

Age 53, a resident of Española and originally of Alcalde, passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2009 following a short battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her brother, Candido "Candie" Salazar II; infant sister, Josephine Anne Salazar; maternal grandparents, Juan Estevan and Josefina R. Martinez of Velarde; paternal grandparents, Antonio J. and Delfina Baros Salazar of Alcalde; uncles, Dr. John Salazar, Ernest Martinez and Alfredo Tafoya; and aunt, Flora Maes. Angela was born in Española on January 29, 1956. She attended Española High School where she graduated in 1974 and continued her education at UNM. Education was very important to her, having been born to a family of educators. Angela was very devoted to her daughters, mother and family. She instilled discipline in her daughter, Candida, to ensure nothing but success for her future, always sure that she knew how important and crucial it was to maintaining her college degree and furthering that degree. She supported Candida in everything she set her mind to and inspired her to dream big and to follow those dreams. Angela spent the last 14 years of her life as a caregiver for her younger daughter, Carmel. When Carmel was diagnosed as being overall developmentally delayed at 9 months, Angela dropped everything else and made Carmel top priority. She loved her daughters very much and family was a major part of her life. "The true measure of who you are is not based on the failures or successes in life; rather it's based on the failures you are faced with and how you pick yourself up from those failures that show the true measure of an individual." Mom, God has called you to be his Angel in Heaven, you will truly be missed, but we know you couldn't be in a better place. You have always been our guiding light and now you have become our guardian angel and you will be in our hearts forever. You truly touched the lives of many, just as you set out to do from day one. We love you. Ms. Martinez is survived by her daughters, Candida L. Martinez and Marie Carmel Martinez; companion, Gerald L. Martinez; mother, Loyda M. Salazar all of Española; father, Candido L. Salazar of Alcalde; brothers and sisters, A.J. Salazar of Alcalde, Antoinette Eichwald of Albuquerque, Donald Salazar of Las Vegas, Nevada and Anna Mae Gallegos of Santa Fe; aunt and God-mother, Mary Sutton and husband Mel of Albuquerque; aunts and uncles, Lucy Tafoya of Alcalde and Violeta Anderson and husband Darryl of Santa Fe; uncle and God-father, Joe R. Martinez of Santa Fe; uncles, Margarito Maes, Danny Martinez and Mary Prejo; nephews and niece, Antonio Carlos and Alia Jasmin Salazar of Alcalde and Augustine and Nicholas Eichwald of Albuquerque and many cousins and other relatives and friends. The Salazar Martinez family has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
