Russell Vande Krol, 85, of Sully, died Thursday, Oct. 3, at Pella Regional Health Center.

His funeral service was this morning, Oct. 7, at First Reformed Church in Sully, the Rev. Roger Runt and the Rev. Brice Hoyt officiating. Burial: Sully Cemetery. Memorials: Hospice of Pella or the Billy Graham Evangelistic Crusade.

Russell Vande Krol was born June 21, 1917, near Taintor. He attended school through eighth grade at rural Ludwick Country Grade School.

On No .22, 1938, he married Johanna Meppelink in Lynnville. They had five children. They lived near Taintor, in Sully, Prairie City and Lynnville. As a young man Russ began his trucking career, and eventually formed Lynnville Transport Co. in 1945. They were living just east of Sully when Johanna died Dec. 22, 1970.

On Nov. 3, 1972, Russ married Margaret Ruth Van Wyk Huyser in Sully. They continued living east of Sully. Russ operated the Sully Stockyards 1973 until retiring in 1979, and continued to work there until it closed in 1985. He was an active participant with his wife, Margaret, in the cafe and bake shop in Sully. In October 2001, they moved into Sully. He was attending First Reformed Church in Sully.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; four children and spouses: Claren D. and Carolyn Vande Krol of Altoona, Lillian J. and James Breckenridge of Tulsa, Okla., Delwin L. and Patti Vande Krol of Fort Madison and Douglas R. and Karen Vande Krol of Paradise Valley, Ariz.; a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Vande Krol of Newton; three stepsons and spouses: Dale and Minnie Huyser, Norman and Debra Huyser and Darl Huyser, all of Sully; 16 grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Lucille DeGreef of Newton and Treva Meppelink of Cameron, Mo.; a brother and wife: Leo and Nellie Vande Krol of Sully; two half-brothers and wives: Lehrl and Ruth Vande Krol of Montezuma and Daniel and Sandra Vande Krol of Sully; his sisters- and brothers-in-law: Jennie (Meppelink) Willemsen of New Sharon, Marie (Meppelink) Barsness of Estevan, Saskatchean, Henry M. and Pearl Van Wyk, Wilma (Van Wyk) Vanderpol, Martin and Marjorie Van Wyk, all of Pella, Jeanetta (Van Wyk) and Fred De Groot of Mitchellville, Margaret (Huyser) and Bennie Dunsbergen of Sully.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Edna Koostra Vande Krol in 1998; his son, Roland B. Vande Krol in 1983; and a brother, Lloyd Van De Krol.

Funeral services for Russell Vande Krol, 85, of Sully were held October 7 at the First Reformed Church in Sully, Iowa, the Rev. Roger Punt and Rev. Brice Hoyt officiated. Music was provided by Linda Schnell, organist and a duet sung by Daniel and Sandra Vande Krol.

Interment was at Sully Cemetery in Sully. Casket bearers were Claren D. Vande Krol, Delwin L. Vande Krol, Douglas R. Vande Krol, Dale E. Huyser, Norman G. Huyser, Darl L. Huyser, James Breckenridge, and Martin Vander Molen.

Russell Vande Krol was the first of five children born to John and Lillie Kruseman Vande Krol. He was born on June 21, 1917 near Taintor. He received his formal education through the eighth grade at the rural Ludwick Country Grade School which was near his home.

On Nov. 22, 1938 he was united in marriage with Johanna Meppelink in Lynnville. To this union five children were born: Claren Dale, Lillian Joan, Roland Bryce, Delwin Lee, and Douglas Ray. During their married life, Russ and Johanna lived near Taintor, in Sully, Prairie City, and Lynnville.

As a young man, Russ began his trucking career and eventually formed the Lynnville Transport Company in 1945. The company is now owned by Marty Vander Molen. Russ and Johanna were living just east of Sully where Johanna passed away December 22, 1970 at the age of 52 years.

On November 3, 1972 Russ was united in marriage with Margaret Ruth Van Wyk Huyser at Sully. Russ and Margaret blended into their family Margaret's three sons: Dale Eugene, Norman Gene and Darl Lee Huyser. They continued to live east of Sully. Trucking continued to be a way of life for Russ. He operated the Sully Stockyards from 1973 until he retired in 1979, and continued to work there until it closed in 1985. Russ was also an active participant with his wife, Margaret, in the operation of the cafe and bakeshop in Sully. In October of 2001, they moved into Sully where they were living at the time of his death.

Russ passed away early Thursday morning, October 3, 2002 at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella at the age of 85 years, 3 months and 12 days.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 30 years, Margaret; his four children and their spouses: Claren D. and Carolyn Vande Krol of Altoona; Lillian J. and James Breckenridge of Tulsa, Okla.; Delwin L. and Patti Vande Krol of Fort Madison; Douglas R. and Karen Vande Krol of Paradise Valley, Ariz.; another daughter-in-law, Cynthia (Roland B.) Vande Krol of Newton; and his three step-sons and their wives: Dale and Minnie Huyser, Norman and Debra Huyser, and Darl Huyser all of Sully; there are 16 grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
