Selma Frances Shumpert Estes, the daughter of John Houston and Rothsura Dora Shumpert, was born March 30, 1896 in Lee County, MS. Her paternal grandparents were William Irvin Shumpert and Frances Elizabeth Conwill Shumpert. Maternal grandparents were Rev. William H. McKinney and Mary Thomas McKinney. Selma's siblings were: William Irvin Shumpert, Archie Lee Shumpert, Mollie Foy Shumpert Hurse, Martha Zerada Shumpert Williams, L.H. Shumpert, Elbert Shumpert, Clara Ozell Shumpert Metcalfe, and Bonnie Truman Shumpert. Selma married Mannie Evans Estes in her parents' home in Lee County August 1, 1915. Selma and Mannie were the parents of nine children: Marie Estes Jones, Ernest Elisha Estes, Foy Lou Estes (Ruth) Basden, Lucille Estes Allen, Mae Estes Ruth, Mannie Leonard Estes, Mannie Weaver Estes, Dora Ellen Estes (Putt) Stroup, and John Thomas Estes. Selma Frances Shumpert Estes died February 19, 1983 in Tupelo, MS. She was a faithful member of Boguefala Baptist Church and had served as a Sunday school teacher in the past. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mannie Evans Estes. Surviving her were all nine children, her sister Clara Metcalfe and brother Truman Shumpert, 25 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
