He was the son of Isaac Cheatham and Lela Stanley. He married Emma Eugenie Wilson on 20 October 1905 in Haleyville, Alabama. He and his brother, Will, owned the Busy Bee Cafe in Birmingham, Alabama until 1910, when he and his family moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. They moved back to Haleyville in 1927.
