Elmer R Cheatham Born on Aug. 30, 1924 Departed on Apr. 25, 2015 and resided in Hillsboro, OR. Service: Saturday, May 9, 2015
Elmer R. Cheatham, 90, a longtime resident of the Hillsboro community, died Saturday morning, April 25, 2015 at the Providence St. Vincent's Medical Center in Portland.
ELMER RICHARD CHEATHAM was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on August 30, 1924, the 5th son of James Richard and Emma Eugenia (Wilson) Cheatham.
He moved to Haleyville, Alabama, in 1927 with his family, where he was raised and received his education, graduating from Haleyville High School in 1942.
He was a Veteran of World War II, joining the United States Army on November 30, 1942 in Birmingham, Alabama, and serving for one enlistment until his Honorable Discharge on December 6, 1945 in Fort McPherson, Georgia, at the rank of Tech Sergeant.
Elmer was united in marriage to Constance June Blaine in Great Falls, Montana, on February 13, 1946. Following their marriage they made their home in the Lewiston, Montana, several other communities in Montana, Spokane, Washington, and Forest Grove, Oregon, until moving to the Hillsboro community, where he has resided since.
June suffered a stroke in 2001, following a few years of Alzheimer's disease. It rendered her unable to care for herself and more than Elmer could care for at home.
Consequently, she resided in the Marquis Care nursing home in Forest Grove until her death in January, 2006. She died just a few days before their 60th anniversary.
Elmer worked as an Air Traffic Control Specialist for about 25 years. He also owned and operated a grocery store and a motel in Lewistown, Montana, along with his wife and her parents, from 1950 until 1966.
In '66, he and his family moved from Lewistown to Great Falls, Montana, where he resumed his career in Air Traffic. They moved to Livingston, then to Bozeman, Montana, where he began regular association with the congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. He was baptized in Billings, Montana, January, 1970. The family later
moved to Spokane, Washington, then to Hillsboro, then to Forest Grove where Elmer served as an Elder in the Forest Grove congregation since 1983. After retirement in 1988, he and June moved back to Hillsboro, where he has resided since that time. He always considered the Forest Grove congregation and the Elders and Ministerial Servants of that congregation as very special.
He enjoyed photography, attending bible studies and dining out, which was something that both June and he enjoyed. They also took a very memorable trip to Israel.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James Richard and Emma Eugenia Cheatham; his four brothers, W. Howard Cheatham, Clarence E. Cheatham, Roy N. Cheatham and James A. Cheatham, and his sister, Jessie E. Cheatham.
He is survived by two sons, Richard Lee "Mickey" Cheatham of Longmont, Colorado, and Dale Alan Cheatham of Everett, Washington; one daughter, Barbara Jean Osterman of Bozeman, Montana; daughter-in-law, Linda, wife of Mickey; five grandchildren, Mike and Mark Cheatham of Longmont, Colorado; Chad and Carson
Osterman of Bozeman, Montana; and Jamie Cheatham of West Palm Beach, Florida; one great-granddaughter, Alyssa Cheatham, of Longmont, Colorado.
The family suggests that remembrances may be contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, 1650 NW Naito Parkway, Suite 190, Portland, Oregon 97209, in his memory.
