Mrs. McPherson Cremated
Funeral services were conducted in the chapel at Oak Hill Cemetery this morning by Rev. Mr. Griffith of the Ascension Church over the body of Mrs. John R. McPherson, widow of the former senator from New Jersey. The remains were enclosed in a massive broadcloth covered casket heavily mounted in silver and the floral tributes were notable. Among those in attendance were Mr. Gregory, a brother of Mrs. McPherson; Mr. A.S. Baldwin, executor of the late senator’s estate and Mr. Arthur Johns, attorney for Mrs. Joseph Muir, the dead woman’s daughter. At the conclusion of the services the body was returned to Lee’s Undertaking Establishment, where it was brought from New York last night and at 1PM was placed in the crematory. The ashes will be placed in the casket which contained the body and will be buried at Oak Hill tomorrow afternoon in the family lot, next to the grave of the son of Senator and Mrs. McPherson.
Mrs. McPherson died March 29 and it was her wish expressed previously to her death that she should be cremated and her dust buried beside her son.
Attorney’s Objection Overruled.
The body was prepared for transportation to Washington by the Merritt Company of 8th Avenue, New York and yesterday morning Mr. Johns, who is Mrs. Muir’s attorney, appeared at the undertakers’ rooms and protested in her name against the removal of the remains, demanding that the body be retained until the arrival from abroad of Mrs. Muir, which he said, would be within a few days. He also declared that he had received cabled instructions from Mrs. Muir to this effect. Messrs. Gregory and Baldwin declined to accede to this request and the body was shipped to this city yesterday afternoon. Mr. Johns arrived this morning and attended the services, as stated.
It is estimated that Mrs. McPherson left a fortune of $5,000,000 and it was said at the time of her death that she had left the entire estate to Mrs. Muir. It was rumored in New York yesterday that a later will, made by Mrs. McPherson a few weeks before her death, had been found, which while providing handsomely for Mrs. Muir, did not make her the sole beneficiary.
