James was a Methodist minister. James started as a grocer in 1900 in Starkville, MS. By 1906, the family had moved to Columbus, MS. In 1913 James compiled the church directory for the First Methodist Church in Columbus. He remained with that church until 1929. He later became a historian and an advertising salesman. James died in a nursing home in Jackson, MS where his daughter Wilda lived. His body was returned to Columbus for burial.
