After her eldest daughter Augusta (Gussie) moved to California with husband John and daughters Isabelle (Ysabel) and Leda, in 1906 after the San Francisco earthquake and fire created job openings for construction workers, the girls Ysabel and Leda were saddened because they never again heard from their grandparents in Chicago. The girls always wondered what happened to their grandparents, and why they never wrote or tried to visit. That remained a family secret.
Isabel (Bell) died as the result of "senile arterio sclerosis" -- according to the county coroner's inquiry. She was 68 years old.
