Charles was the son of John Smith and Esther Woods Smith, born March 20, 1858, in Sangamon County, near Springfield, Illinois and departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Friend near Kilbourne, Illinois, May 10, 1928, aged 70 years, one month and twenty days.

While still a small boy, his parents moved to Mason County, settling in Bath Township, where practically his entire life was spent with the exception of about five years, during which period he lived near Mason City.

After attaining the age of manhood he engaged in the occupation of farming and on March 9, 1879, was united in marriage to Rachel Ann Phelps, making their home on a farm near Bath, Illinois. To this union eleven children were born, seven of them survive to mourn his departure.

His wife died October 26, 1917, preceding him in death eleven years. A year later a son, Eugene, died during the flu epidemic in a military training camp. A few years previous to this a daughter, Inez, while still in the full bloom of youth, met a tragic death by accidental drowning near Petersburg. Two children also died in infancy.

The surviving children are Jenous Smith of Thorpe, Wisconsin, Irvin of Bath, Illinois, Willis of Kilbourne, Illinois, Mrs. Eva Friend and Mrs. Vada Wallace, both of Kilbourne, Illinois, Mrs. Myrtle Eilers and Mrs. Irene Eilers, both of Chandlerville, Illinois. He is also survived by twenty-four grandchildren.

Mr. Smith had been in failing health for a period of about six years. After becoming unable to care for himself about three years ago, he was taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Friend, where during the last period of his most acute suffering he was most tenderly cared for, and everything possible done for his comfort and well-being.

Mr. Smith was well and favorably known among a wide circle of friends and acquaintances of the older residents of Bath Township. He was a kind and generous neighbor, and a hard working, respected member of his home community.

Like so many of the older generation who were the pioneers of this community, he bore bravely the vicissitudes and trials of the earlier life of this period, and in the face of suffering, sorrow and hardhsip, always carried on to the best of his ability.

Funeral services were held Sunday Afternoon, May 13, at the Bath M. E. Church.
