The 1880 U.S. Federal Census has the family still living in Waltham, Hancock but no longer living with the Colby family. At this time, John and Martha were the parents of 3 daughters, Alice, Carrie and Susie.
By 1890, the family had relocated to Merrill Plantation in Aroostook County, where John and his brother, Enoch have opened their own Saw-Mill. The family saw mill will play a significant role in Alice Mae's life.
On 25 Mar 1890, Alice Mae gave birth to a son, LeRoy George, who was premature. According to family stories, he was not expected to live, but defied the odds and thrived. Although his father was not named on his birth certificate, it was an open secret that the baby was fathered by Wellington Brown, who worked as a carpenter at the Gardner Saw Mill and who, in 1890 married Maud Gerrish, Alice Mae's 1st cousin.
On the 1900 U.S. Census, Alice is found living in Merrill Plantation with her parents, her sister Bertha and her 10 year old son. LeRoy.
Alice Mae Gardner died on 11 May 1901 at the home of her parents. She is buried in the family plot in Merrill Cemetery, next to her younger sister Carrie.
