Magnina Gunnlaugson was born Magnina Jakobina Magnusdottir November 24,1849 in Skogur, Reykjahverfi, South-Pingeyjarsyla, Iceland to Magnus Jakobsson (1818-1865) and Gudrun Indridadottir (about 1811-1862). Her parents were not married. She would lose her parents at a young age. She had a half-sibling Oddur Magnusson born June 25, 1853 in Hofteigur I Jokuldal, Nordur-Mulasysla, Iceland. They shared a father.

Magnina along with Oddur and fellow Icelander, Peter Gunnlaugson came to Washington Island in 1873. Magnina and Peter Gunnlaugson would wed in June of 1876. There were twelve children born of this union. Ten are listed below. Family records indicate the other two children lost in infancy were Gertrude and Oscar.
