Married 2nd: Mary Trehorne Date: June 1850 Samuel was put to work early, being apprenticed as a carpenter and cabinet maker. That became his trade all his life. He operated the first furniture and cabinet shop in Cedar City , building the furniture that he sold. Samuel and Mary had been baptized in March 1848 , a year before they left for America . Samuel was taken ill at the same time, so Mary and he were advised to remain in Council Bluffs until he was well. From his first marriage, they had four children, plus a son born just prior to Mary 's death. The baby died too. While there, he married again and their first child was born there. They left for Salt Lake in June 1952 and a boy was born on the way. After their arrival in Salt Lake , they were called to go to Iron County and work in the iron works. In 1855 the Cedar Stake was organized and Samuel was made a member of the first high council. That day he consecrated all his possessions to the church (valued at $771). In 1860 he was elected to the city council and was re-elected, plus he served three terms as city treasurer. He served for 18 years as first counselor to Bishop Lunt . In 1876 he filled a mission to Wales . When he sailed for home, there were 400 converts on board, many from his conference. He loved the Sunday School and served for 18 years as superintendent.
