James Lewis "Bobo" Vinyard was the third and last child born to Jesse Homer Vinyard and Mabel Linnie Wimberley Vinyard. James was born on January 28, 1927, in Hays County, Texas. His maternal grandparents were Andrew Jackson Wimberley and Fanny B. Tanner Wimberley. His great-grandparents were Pleasant Wimberley and Amanda Julian Jackson Wimberley.

James joined the U.S. Navy and fought in World War II as did his older brother Leslie Joe Vinyard.

James married twice. His first wife was Sherry K. Dossett whom he married on July 29, 1972. His second wife was Elizabeth A. Kaminski whom he married on Janaury 12, 1991.

James died at the age of 69 on June 16, 1996, in Corpus Christi, Nueces County, Texas. He was buried beside his parents in the San Marcos Cemetery, San Marcos, Texas. His brother Leslie Joe Vinyard (1921-2006) and sister Jessie Jewell Vinyard Myers (1919-2005) are also buried in the same family plot.
