His maternal grandparents were Andrew Jackson Wimberley and Fanny B. Tanner Wimberley. His great-grandparents were Pleasant Wimberley and Amanda Julian Jackson Wimberley.
Leslie joined the U.S. Navy and fought in World War II as did his younger brother James Lewis Vinyard.
Leslie married Beatrice Charlene "Charlene" Cooper who was born on February 28, 1925, in Bell County, Texas. Her parents were Louis F. and Nannie C. Cooper. Leslie and Charlene had two children--a daughter and a son.
Leslie died at the age of 85 on July 7, 2006, and was buried in the San Marcos Cemetery, San Marcos, Texas. He was buried beside his parents, his brother James Lewis Vinyard who had died in 1996 and his sister Jessie Jewell Vinyard Myers who had died in 2005.
