Grandson of Marline O'Briant Tully who raised him since the age of 4, Ray Leon Tully and Myrna Mangione. Great-grandson of Floris O'Briant and the late Wilton Marlin O'Briant. Son-in-law of Nicole Wallace and Timothy Gleason. Brother-in-law of Mark Andrew Wilson. Also survived by a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. PFC Brian Russell Bates, Jr. was awarded the US Army Bronze Star Medal, US Army Purple Heart Medal, US Army Good Conduct Medal, US Army Afghanistan Campaign Medal, US Army Global War on Terrorism Medal, US Army Combat Infantry Badge, and the NATO Medal for his service while deployed in Afghanistan. Other awards include the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon. Brian was among eight soldiers killed in the southern province of Kandahar in two separate roadside bombings. He was 20.
