Jacob Foltz was the oldest son of Jonathon Foltz, who came with his family from Pennsylvania to Indiana in 1838. Jonathon bought the Johnson House or the Old Tavern, a large two and one-half story fram house situated about two and one half miles west of Eagle Creek (near Indianapolis, Indiana). Mr. Foltz kept the tavern until his death in September 1849. There was a sign swinging on a pole in front of the building reading: Tavern kept by Jonathon Foltz. Below this was the picture of a horse with his head toward the barn across the road. At this tavern Henry Ward Beecher performed the marriage ceremony of Jonathon's daughter, Mary, to Dr. Samuel Wilgus of Lafayette. There is a story that James K. Polk once stayed here over night. Eve Byrkit Foltz, wife of Jonathon's son, Jacob, remembers six Indians taking dinner at the tavern in 1841 on their way to Washington, D.C. to consult with the government. She and her mother-in-law served the dinner.
