BINGHAM - Dennis William Bingham, son of Sebird and Marjorie Bingham, was born on November 11, 1947 at Chicago, Ill. His untimely death came on the battlefields of Vietnam on July 17, 1969, at the age of 21 years, eight months and six days. He was a member of the 5th Special Forces Group and had been in Vietnam only about three months.

As a young boy, Dennis accepted Christ as his personal Saviour and lived his life pleasing God and always doing for others he loved.

In his early years, Dennis' parents spent time working in the mid-eastern and mid-central states. During this time of travel he attended several schools and made many friends.

At the age of twelve his parents moved back to the Bingham family farm near Chariton. At this time, Dennis attended the Chariton Community Schools. He graduated from Chariton High School in the class of 1965 with honors. He enrolled at Centerville Community College and graduated in 1967, again making many new friends.

Wanting to travel more and being adventurous, Dennis spent most of the summer after college in Europe with a close friend. They roughed it through Germany, Sweden, Denmark and England. After returning home, he enlisted in the United States Army and in so doing, his goal was to be a member of the Elite Special Forces Group.

He began his training at Ft. Bliss, Tex. on February 13, 1968. After spending his ten day leave with his parents, he continued with his training at Ft. Gordon, Ga., and at Ft. Benning, Ga., where he received his paratrooper wings. At this time he qualified and was accepted for training at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Training Center.

In October, 1968, he received the Green Beret - a dream fulfilled since his junior high school days.

Dennis loved the outdoors - roaming through the woods and hills on the farm and reading his many books were his favorite ways of spending his leisure hours.

He loved doing for other people and in so doing, received much praise for his kindness. He was a helpful hand to many people. A favor to them was for the asking.

Besides his loving parents, Bill and Marjorie, he will be sadly missed by his brother, Michael, 20, and his three sisters, Brenda, 17, Cindy, 13, and Cathy, 8; also his grandmothers, Mrs. Alice Bingham or rural Chariton and Mrs. Lucy Stansbery of Williamson, and many devoted aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends whom he treasured.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. James Reynolds at 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 28, 1969, at the Beardsley-Fielding Funeral Home. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery.

Pallbearers and military honors performed at the graveside were from Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.
