William McKitrick was the oldest son of John McKitrick and Mary Vaughn McKitrick. It is believed that he was born in Noble County, Ohio. William's siblings were: Isaac, Robert, Alexander, Abraham, John Wesley, Susanah, Sheridon, and Mary. He enlisted in the Union Army at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio on August 15, 1861. He was in the 30th Ohio Infantry, Company K. (Company K was from Noble County, OH) He was killed in action during the Battle of South Mountain in Maryland during the Civil War. He was the only son out of four who served for the Union Army to die in battle. He was laid to rest in the Antietam National Cemetery.
