" Born in Mifflin Township,Allegheny County,Pennsylvania,near the present site of McKeesport,on the 10th of October 1824.
He is the grandson of Andrew McClure,one of the first judges of Allegheny County,who came to America from Ireland,when he was about eighteen years old,and settled east of the Allegheny Mountains,but afterwards removed to Allegheny county,where he resided until his death,which occurred in 1845,at the advanced age of one hundred and three years.
His [Alexander's] father's name was also Andrew,and his mother, Margaret nee Abraham,was born in Steubenville,Ohio,and resided there until her marriage with Andrew McClure,when they moved to Elizabeth Township,Allegheny County,but only lived there a short time,when they moved to Mifflin Township,where they both resided until their death.
Mr.[Andrew the 2nd]McClure,Alexander's Father , died at the age of sixty-five years, and Mrs. Margaret McClure died March 29,1875 at the age of eighty-four years.The old homestead is still held in possession by their son,Alexander M. McClure.
They[Andrew & Margaret McClure]had six children:
Francis;
Sarah;
Alexander M.- [ the subject of this biography and memorial];
Margaret;
Andrew and Susan;
and they are all yet living.

A.M. McClure[the subject of this FindAGrave memorial]was married to Sarah H. Cox,eldest daughter of William and Hannah Cox. She was born in Leicestershire,England,about seventy-two miles from London,on December 13,1827,and came with her parents to America in 1830. They settled in Saltsburg,Indiana County,Pennsylvania,but removed to a farm near the present site of the [McClure]homestead,in Allegheny county,where she resided until her marriage. Mrs. McClure[Sarah Cox] died April 27,1880.

They[Alexander & Sarah] had twelve children,nine daughters and three sons,of whom seven daughters and two sons are yet living.
~~ Two daughters died in infancy;
~~ The eldest son,William Alexander McClure,who was born January 13,1857,and was engaged in the lumber business with his father in McKeesport,died May 3,1880. He[William A. McClure] was married January 1,1880 to Carrie Rath,of Mifflin Township,Allegheny County;
~~ Hannah Jane,the eldest daughter,married James E. Patterson,March 25,1879 and resides in McKeesport;
~~ Josephine,Married Edward Seifert,February 22,1876 and lives in Big Run[Jefferson County,Pennsylvania];
~~ Susan M.,living in Mifflin Township,Allegheny county;
~~ Catherine L.,married James H. Barrelle,September 29th,living in Punxsutawney[Jefferson County,Pennsylvania];
~~ Andrew Francis,married Susan Charles[sic-??],December 19,1882 and resides on the old homestead in Allegheny county;
~~ Emma L.,married W.H. Tyson,August 25,1885 and lives in Big Run;
~~ John McClure; Nora D. and Sarah Belle[McClure],are all unmarried and live with their father at Big Run.

Not being satisfied with his avocation of a farmer,Mr. McClure at an early age embarked in the lumber traffic and for many years carried an extensive trade along the Monongahela River. In 1861 he made his first business trip to the wilds of Jefferson County,and ever since has been carrying on a large business in this county,but has only made his home here since 1884,when he moved to his present residence in Big Run. Mr. McClure,besides his large lumber interests in Jefferson and Clearfield county,owns some of the best farms in Henderson township,and built a large hotel in Big Run, and the Hotel McClure,besides being engaged in the mercantile business. He is one of the foremost citizens in furthering every enterprise that enhances the prosperity of the place."

Alexander was married a 2nd time to Harriet C. Yohe ;that marriage is believed by many to have occurred sometime between 1875 to 1889. It should be noted that Harriet C. Yohe was not mentioned in the 1888 Kate Scott publication pertaining to Alexander M. McClure and all of his children were credited at that time to be the children of his union with his 1st wife, Sarah H. nee Cox McClure,who passed away in 1880.

Alexander is seen in the 1880 Thompson Run,Mifflin Township,Allegheny County,Pennsylvania Census Record;dated 12 June 1880; Aged 58 ;listed as a widower,Lumber Merchant with seven of his then still single children,namely:
~ S. Margaret McClure,age 27 ;
~ Lillian McClure,age 22;
~ Andrew McClure,age 20;
~ Emma McClure, age 18;
~ John McClure, age 15;
~ Dottie McClure ,age 14;
~ Bell McClure ,age 10.
This record offers no evidence of a marriage to Harriet Yohe by that time in 1880.

Alexander M. McClure was also the founder of the McClure Cemetery located in Big Run,Jefferson County,Pennsylvania;where he and many of his immediate family and descendants are also interred.

In the Last Will & Testament of Alexander McCLURE,it sets aside 8 acres of land,to be used as a cemetery,located on the hill behind the railroad depot in Big Run.
Alexander McClure ordered that a mausoleum be built to house his remains and had reserved one acre of the land surrounding the mausoleum to be used for the burial of his family members.
The remaining land was to be divided and sold to the public for a burial ground.
