PALOUSE, Wash.-- Former area resident, Zena Marie Dickinson Broughton, 58, died Nov. 24, 2008, at Walla Walla General Hospital of complications from a lung disease. . . . The graveside service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Dayton City Cemetery followed by a reception at First Congregational Church, 214 S. Third St., Dayton.

Mrs. Broughton was born Dec. 20, 1949, in Dayton to Benton Lombard and Susan Harris Dickinson. She grew up on the family farm at Starbuck and graduated from St. Paul's School for Girls, Walla Walla, in 1967. She attended Yakima Valley College and received a bachelor's degree in English from Central Washington University in 1973. She received a teaching certification from the University of Idaho and a special endorsement in library sciences.
On June 9, 1973, she and William "Bill" Cranston Broughton married in Dayton. In 1975, the couple moved to the family farm near Dayton. In 1990, they moved to Palouse and lived in Garfield from 1992-2003 when they returned to Palouse. Mr. Broughton died Feb. 20, 2007. She was a substitute teacher in Palouse and Garfield; library manager at the County Library; worked at the University of Idaho; and at Opportunities Unlimited in Moscow, Idaho. She was elementary librarian at Blue Ridge Elementary School and was elementary librarian for Moscow School District at the time of her death.
Mrs. Broughton participated in numerous community organizations and volunteered at her children's schools. She was an active member of the Palouse Federated Church, AAUW, a Bible study group, and a book club. She was also a member of First Congregational Church, Skyline Juniors, and PEO. In earlier years she enjoyed boating, water and snow skiing, gardening, cooking, and tennis. Her recent interests included reading, and spending time with family and friends, especially at her cabin on Lake Coeur d'Alene.
Mrs. Broughton is survived by two daughters, Abbie Broughton Marsh of Riverside, Calif., and Alexandra "Alex" Blood Broughton of Pittsburgh; a son Benton "Ben" Dickinson Broughton of Palouse; her mother of Dayton; and her sisters, Dallas Dickinson McQuary, Lois Vankat, and Jennie Dickinson Ball; and a grandson, William Marsh. She was preceded in death by her husband and her father.
Note: Zena was the granddaughter of William Townsend Dickinson and Jennie (Johnson) Dickinson, the great-granddaughter of Benton L. "Ben" & Lucy A. (Atherton) Dickinson, the great-great-granddaughter of W. T. & Laura (Jackson) Dickinson, and the g.g.g. granddaughter of George Washington Jackson & Elizabeth H. (Farr) Jackson.
