Mary Austin Barnett, 81, of Laurel, died Oct. 22, 2009. A native of Mize, she was a graduate of Laurel General Hospital School of Nursing. Upon graduating, Mary became a surgical nurse at Masonite Hospital of Laurel.There will be a private burial at Calvary Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Mize, with services to follow at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 at First Baptist Church of Laurel. Dr. Randy Turner will officiate Mrs. Barnett was a devoted member of First Baptist Church, where she had served as WMU director and was a Sunday School greeter for more than 20 years. An active member in the community, she served as President, Treasure, and Scholarship Chairman throughout her membership of the Three Arts Club.Mrs. Barnett devoted much of her time to the Daughters of American Revolution, where she had served as Regent of the Nahoula chapter. She also served three years on the Rosalie board and was a part of many statewide committees. In 1998, she traveled to Washington D. C. to serve as reception chairman at the installation of the president general. In 2002, she was elected State Conference Chairman to the Mississippi State Society.Mrs. Barnett was an admirer of beauty and an avid gardener. She was previous president and honorary member of the Northwood Garden Club. Mary played an active role in the community as well as in the lives of her family and friends. She was a devoted wife and mother, loving grandmother, and loyal sister and friend.She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin E. and Mary Anderson Austin, six brothers, James, Clarence, Roy, Curtis, Joe, and A. J., and a grandson, Edward Sheppard.She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Walter O. Barnett, Jr., two daughters, Kathy Sheppard of Knoxville, Tenn., Cindy Lacy and husband Richard of Orange Beach, Ala.; one son, Bob Barnett and wife Dawn of Laurel, one sister, Margaret Morgan, six grandchildren, Ric and Austin Lacey, Walter Sheppard, Katie, Jennifer, and Mary Margaret Barnett, one great-granddaughter, and numerous nieces and nephews.To sign or view the family guestbook, visit www.leadercall.com.
