HERMAN P. SCHRAG
Feb. 3, 1922 - Oct. 23, 2009

DALLAS ~ Herman P. Schrag was born to Peter M. and Helena (Peters) Schrag on February 3, 1922 in Monroe, Wash. They moved to Pratam, Ore. in 1924 and then to a farm north of Independence in 1926. Herman attended Oak Point School grades one through eight, Beacon Bible School in Dallas for two years, and graduated from Independence High School in 1942.

In 1942, Herman was called to duty in the US Army for three and a half years. He served in the Medical Corp Hospital at Camp White in Medford, Ore. and as a clerk in the dental department.

Herman met his future wife LAURENA when they were both attending Sunday School at Zion Mennonite Church near Polk Station, north of Dallas; which later became the Grace Mennonite Church. They were married February 1, 1944.

His love for His Lord led him to serve as choir director, a Sunday School teacher, trustee, deacon, and assisted with the young people's programs.

Their first child, Dale, was born in 1945, second son, Donald, joined the family in 1947 and a daughter Lynette in 1951.

After his discharge from the Army in 1946, Herman went to work at the Dallas City Cleaners and sixteen years later Herman purchased the business. He and Laurena worked together in that business until their retirement in 1984. They took many trips with the Philadelphians across Canada, the East Coast, Alaska and Hawaii. They also enjoyed time traveling around the US in their motor home. Their years of travel brought much joy to their lives.

In May 2004, Herman and Laurena moved to the Dallas Retirement Village where Laurena passed away seven months later. Herman continued to enjoy the social interaction at the Village spending much time in volunteer work and sharing his faith with the residents and staff. In 2007, he received the Volunteer of the Year award from the Oregon Alliance of Senior and Health Services and was honored at a reception in Eugene.

Herman passed way peacefully in to the presence of the Lord Jesus surrounded by his family after suffering a severe stroke some weeks earlier.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Laurena; and grandson, Bradly.

He is survived by his son, Dale and Bev Schrag of Dallas, Donald and Charlene Schrag of Estacada; daughter, Lynette and Dan McDonald of Prairie City; and grandsons, Troy McDonald, Casey and his wife, Rhianna McDonald; Sister, Verna Winn; nephew, John Winn; and niece, Carol Cook.

Viewing will be from 12 noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 25 in the mortuary. Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, October 26 in the Dallas Cemetery followed by a Celebration of his life at 11 a.m. in the Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center.
