Ira F. Petersen, son of Marie and Jens Petersen was born near Hardy, Nebraska, April 6, 1913. He was baptized and confirmed in the Bethany Lutheran Church. He entered the armed services in January, 1932, and after a few months at Ft. Knox, Ky., he was sent overseas to Ireland and England in May, 1942. He served in the African campaign and in Italy, where he was killed in action on February 8, 1944.
He is survived by his parents, two sisters - Sarah of Omaha, and Mrs. Harley Jensen of Nora; one brother, Magnus; his father, P.P. Petersen of Eugene, Oregon; his grandmother Jensen in Denmark; his brother-in-law, Harley Jensen; also other relatives and a large number of friends.
Memorial services were held on Sunday afternoon at Bethany church (sic) south of Ruskin. During these services a gold star was placed on the church service flag by Pfc. Glenn Hansen of Great Bend, Kansas, and a flag was presented to the family by T. Morgensen, representing Kolling Post of the American Legion of Ruskin. Taps was played by Wayne Megrue of Superior. A prelude and postlude of organ music was played by Mrs. J.H. Petersen. Rev. J.H. Petersen gave the sermon.

Mr. and Mrs. Jens Petersen received word the first of the week of the death of their son, Cpl. Ira Petersen, on March 18, while serving with the armed forces in Italy. This is the first casualty reported among boys from our community and causes a feeling of sadness to every one. Sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved.
