LIMESTONE and SHELBY COUNTY, ALABAMA
James Fleming McLane, was a citizen of Shelby county, Alabama. He was in the insurance business at Saginaw and also a justice of the peace of his district, an office which he held for a number of years while residing at Shelby. James was also postmaster at Shelby for a time under President McKinley.
Mr. McLane was a native of Limestone county, Alabama, born at Athens, Dec. 19, 1833, the son of William (1793-1872) and Elizabeth Jane (Bates) McLane, (1804-1881) the latter a native of Tennessee. His mother’s death occurred in 1874 in Talladega and his father William McLane died in 1872 in Calhoun County, Alabama. They are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Talladega, Talladega County, AL.
William McLane was a North Carolinian, who came early to Alabama and settled in Limestone County, where he married Elizabeth Jane Bates. In 1834 he removed to Talladega, where he resided for a time. William McLane was a stanch Democrat, and during his life had at one time served as county coroner. Both William and Elizabeth McLane were members of the Methodist Episcopal church, and they had eight children, only two were living in 1903.
James Fleming McLane passed the period of his boyhood in Talladega, where he was given the benefit of good schools. He was apprenticed to the carpenter’s trade and followed that business successfully for a number of years in Talladega. He became a proprietor of a carriage shop in Talladega.
Later he came to Shelby County where for a number of years he was employed as a patternmaker. In 1903 he settled at Saginaw and entered the insurance business. He favored Democratic policies but cared little for politics. He was a worthy member of the Masonic fraternity, Calhoun lodge, 462, and of the Samaritan lodge, 99, of the Odd Fellows.
Cynthia Pond born Apr. 21, 1842, is the daughter of Judge Ebenezer Pond who resided in Coosa county, became his wife in 1858.
They had three children in 1904;
Charles Pond McLane (1859-1936)a bookkeeper for the Saginaw Lime & Lumber company; married Birdie Deramus (1868-1942) They had four known children. Annie McLane Harper; Ruby McLane Shaw; Nannette Lee McLane; Charles H. McLane
James Henry McLane (1861-1918) an engineer for the same,
Rosa Eugenia McLane wife of George W. Crossett
James F. McLane died Jan 25, 1918, and Cynthia Anna (Pond) McLane died may 19, 1905. They are both buried in the Old Shelby Cemetery in Shelby, Shelby County, Alabama.
