West Drake was the second of five children born to William Drake and Jane Drake (nee Carr). He passed away in childhood just short of his 7th birthday.

After his death, his parents and four siblings moved to Milwaukee, WI. His older brother, George C. Drake, became the first Wisconsin soldier killed in the Civil War.
