MARTIN JOHNSON RITES HELD AT PITTSBORO MONDAY
ACTIVE IN BAPTIST CHURCH---WAS FORMER COUNTY COUNCILMAN
Martin Luther Johnson, age 85, the oldest and one of the most active workers in the Pittsboro Baptist church, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Arthur Garner, last Saturday. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Baptist church in charge of Elder E. A. Williams of Whitestown. Burial was in Green Lawn cemetery, Brownsburg.
Mr. Johnson was born in Boone county, near Jamestown, September 7, 1853, one of thirteen children of Patrick and Clements Johnson. In 1876, he married Lenora Catherine Schenck. They lived on a farm north of Pittsboro until Mrs. Johnson died July 25, 1926, when he retired and moved to the home of a daughter, Mrs. Garner, in Pittsboro.
He was a charter member of the Pittsboro Baptist church and had served as either deacon or trustee for the past fifty years. A Republican, he served two terms as county councilman from his district and had been a member of the township advisory board.
Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Melvin Stonebraker of Brownsburg, Mrs. Garner, Mrs. Benjamin Coleman of Indianapolis, Mrs. Virgil Johnson of Cloverdale, and Mrs. Howard Hubble of Pittsboro; Another daughter, Mrs. Ola Weaver of Pittsboro, died in 1932. There are also fifteen grandchildren, two brothers and three sisters.
Mr. Johnson was the third man past eighty years old to be called from Pittsboro last week. The other two of which notes were made in last week's issue were Jeremiah Scott, age 82, and Williard Remster, age 82.
