As a young girl, she played the mandolin and enjoyed playing tennis. After graduating from Ohio Wesleyan University, which was an unusual achievement for women of that era, she taught high school English. After marrying, she enjoyed traveling and was very active through the years doing volunteer work. In 1971, she was recognized as "Woman of the Year" in Alliance, Ohio.
