Jacobus was the son of Jan de Meester and Pieternella van Alten. He married Lavina Buijze on 28 Nov 1867 in Axel, Zeeland, Netherlands. Jacobus and Lavina came to the USA with their three children on the SS Vaderland from Antwerp, arriving in Philadelphia on 18 August 1873. They then settled in Grand Rapids, MI where their remaining 6 children were born and raised.

The date of death entered on Jacobus' death certificate is unclear. Either it was "May 12" and rewritten as "May 13," or it was originally "May 13" and rewritten as "May 12." I have gone with the date recorded on the headstone and in his obituary.
