Services for Ferdinand Matter, 75, died Monday at a Bismarck hospital, will be Friday at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Strasburg. Burial in church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Joe, Ted and Pete Mattern, Mike and Syl Schumacher and Adam Gefreh. Rosary will be recited Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
Born 22 Nov 1896 to John and Mary (Prigadine) Mattern in Russia. Came to US age 3 with his parents who settled in Eureka for a time before coming to the Strasburg area. Married Elizabeth Schumacher on 11 Feb 1919 at Strasburg. They moved to a farm W of Linton in 1930 and 17 years later moved to Strasburg.
After retiring from farming, he owned the Mattern Blue Room Bar in Strasburg, member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Strasburg Civic Club, St. Peter and Paul Verein and Beaver Valley Horse Club.
He leaves his widow; 2 sons, Elmer of Shenandoah, IA and Leo of Strasburg; 2 daughters, Mrs. (Adeline) Aymor of Mt. Morris, MI and Mrs. Syl (Betty) Schumacher of Linton; 16 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Peter of Bismarck, Theodore of Linton, Joe of Strasburg; 4 sisters, Mrs. Walburg Wald, Mrs. Mary Gefreh and Mis. Julia Wolf all of Linton and Mrs. Kathryn Mitzel of Roscoe, SD.
