Mrs. Billie Lou Mayes, 95, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2015 in Dallas, Texas.
Funeral services honoring the life of Mrs. Mayes will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Central Presbyterian Church with Pastor Kelly Pigott officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Kinney-Underwood Funeral Home. The family will receive guests from 12:00 p.m. until service time at Central Presbyterian Church.

Billie Lou Mayes was born on August 3, 1920, in Graham, Texas, the daughter of the late William Warden Martin and Bertha Dieter Martin. She married William Edward Mayes on October 23, 1943. Her husband preceded her in death in 1998. She had one brother, John Warden Martin who died in 2006.
Billie Lou Mayes had a private piano studio in Stamford, Texas. She studied piano at Texas Christian University, Texas Women’s University, and Julliard School of Music in New York City. She was a Life Member of the National Federation of Music Clubs, and was a member of the Abilene Music Teachers Association as well as the Texas and National Music Teachers Associations. She was selected Teacher of the Year in 1986 and in 2000 by the Abilene Music Teachers Association and received the Hall of Fame Award from the National Guild. She served as an adjudicator for the Guild Auditions, in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. She continued teaching a small class of talented students after she moved to Irving, Texas, teaching her last lessons in December, 2014 at the age of 94.
Mrs. Mayes is lovingly survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Roger Hughes of Desoto, Texas and by her two granddaughters, Laurie Hughes, Lisa Kennedy and her husband, Matthew; two great-granddaughters, Alicia and Jennifer Kennedy, as well as Christian Edds, Alicia’s fiancée; and a sister-in-law, Fay Martin.
