Jacob was one of 12 children of William Compton (1832-1878) of Staines Moor, Windsor, Middlesex, England and Maria Cain (1833-1895) of Colney, Middlesex, England

He married Emily Amelia Nott in 1900

A reserved judgment was delivered by Mr W.P. James, S.M. to-day in the case of Henry E. Evans v Jacob W. Compton, a claim from £200 damages for alleged breach of contract to cut In the course of his judgment the Magistrate said this was another instance of the folly of business men trying to do without a lawyer in drawing up an important contract. Judgment was for plaintiff for £50 and £6 16s costs (a total in 2008 of $8,102)

OBITUARY . Mr J. W. COMPTON
Well Known In farming community
The death occurred in Wellington recently of Mr J. W. Compton, formerly a settler at Hopelands, at the age of 63 years. He was born at Fernridge, Masterton and was for many years farming in that district where he was well known as a breeder of Lincoln sheep. He was a frequent exhibitor of sheep and horses at A. an P. Society shows and his sound opinions and knowledge of these classes of stock led to his acting as judge upon a number of occasions, more latterly.
Mrs Compton predeceased her husband some 13 years ago but they are survived by a family of sons, Messrs Harold and Thomas Compton, Pahiatua, Neil of Hastings and Alan of Hopelands, Woodville.
While he lived at Masterton, the late Mr Compton was also a member of the Order of Rechabites.
At his funeral, which took place in Woodville on Tuesday last, Rev J. H. Boyd (of St David's Presbyterian Church), officiated at the church and the graveside. The pall-bearers were deceased nephews, Messrs C. Wilton (Balance), E. Wilton (Rangitumau), E. and R. Raynor and Messrs D. Mabey and J. Cheyne. A large number of his old friends and sympathisers from various districts assembled to pay their last respects,
