Each fall CCHS honors a local veteran with a special exhibit. This year we are featuring Sergeant Carryll A. Banta who served in Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 743rd Tank Battalion during WW II.

Carryll Banta, Howard Froberg and Tony Heisler enlisted in the Army, went through basic training and served in the tank battalion together.

The 743rd Tank Battalion led the beachhead assault for the D-Day Invasion on Omaha Beach in June 1944. The 743rd Tank Battalion was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and nine of its soldiers were awarded Distinguished Service Crosses for their actions on Omaha Beach.

Less than a month later, Tec 4 Anthony Heisler was killed in action while driving the Company A Commander’s tank through the hedgerows en-route to St. Lo. The tank was hit by enemy fire and exploded near Hêbêcrêvon, France.
