BAXTER - Larry D. Cates, 76, Baxter, passed away on Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud. Larry was born on Jan. 23, 1933, in Fargo, N.D., to Eldred and Florence (Quance) Cates.

Larry was a United States Army veteran and a member of the American Legion. He loved to garden and work on his computer. He worked for the railroad (Northern Pacific) and later was a baker at SuperValu and a state driver's license examiner. He also volunteered part time at St. Joseph's Medical Center as a valet parker. He was a member of the Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Baxter.

He is survived by his daughter, Judy Bergstrom, Minneapolis; three grandchildren, Erik, Siri and Kirsten; and four great-grandchildren. Also survived by his sisters, Irene Aldahl, Baxter, Doris (Ernest) Jonson, Golden Valley, and Donna Nelson, Fargo.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; his parents; three sisters; and one brother.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, at the Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Baxter with Pastor Darrell Pedersen officiating. Interment will be in Baxter City Cemetery with military rites provided by the American Legion Post No. 255 of Brainerd. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.

Arrangements are with the Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Brainerd.
