"J. S. (Sam) Somerville, 68, 335 W. Buell, Apt. 1, a retired railroad engineer, died Thursday at Bannock Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

He was born Nov. 17, 1902, at Milan, Mo., to Alfred O. and Martha M. Stewart Somerville. He received his education in Milan and Central College at Fayette, Mo. He farmed for a number of years with his father. He then was associated with P. M. Parr in a legal practice in Milan. He came to Pocatello and began as a fireman on Sept. 30, 1946, with the Union Pacific Railroad. He was promoted to engineer on July 3, 1961, and retired Jan. 1, 1971.

He was a talented musician and played both the violin and the piano and enjoyed playing at religious functions. He was a member of the Third Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the United Transportation Union, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, and Union Pacific Old Timers Club No. 1.

He married Mae Bagshaw Jesperson on April 17, 1968, at Sparks, Nev. Survivors include his wife; five stepchildren, Carl Jesperson of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Wayne (Jenetta) Wardley of Ogden, Utah, Mrs. Frank (Sharon) Daniels of Rexburg, and Don Odell and Steve Jesperson, both of Idaho Falls; 14 step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Mrs. William D. (Ruth) Mayhugh of Bethany, Mo.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in the Downard Chapel with Bishop A. Leroy Goodwin of the Third Ward LDS church officiating. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens."
