Samuel came to Illinois when his parents relocated there from Indiana. His aunt, Margaret Davenport sister of his father, had urged the family to move to Illinois where there was good land available. Samuel bought 80 acres of land next to his father's farm.
On July 4, 1845 Col. George Davenport, his uncle, was murdered. Samuel was part of the posse who went looking for the murders. His gun accidentally went off and tore his thumb off.
Samuel married Margaret McDonald in Franklin County, Indiana, in 1841, they had eight children all born in Rock Island County, Illinois:
George Davenport, John Brady, Arzilla Ann, Mary Druzilla, Jeremiah L., James P., Israel Gregg and William Winfield. Margaret died after the birth of William and is buried in Chapel Grove Cemetery, Rock Island County, IL.
Samuel married again to Lydia Elbright Mahaffey. Lydia brought three children into the family from her marriage. Samuel and Lydia added four more children to the family: Clark Donelson, Margaret Elizabeth, Barbara Ellen and Lucy Amanda. They relocated to Henry County, Illinois. They both died in Henry County.
