Judy was the oldest child of Paul C. and Phyllis (Byland) Blankenhorn.

She grew up in the Normain Heights neighborhood of Mishawaka, Indiana. She attended North Side Elementary School through 4th grade, Battell Elementary for 5th and 6th grades, Main Junior High for 7th and 8th grades, and Mishawaka High School.

During elementary and junior high school, Judy was a Camp Fire Girl.

She graduated from Mishawaka High School (1968) and from Patricia Stevens College.

Judy served in the U.S. Army from January 1972 until May 1973. She was honorably discharged after she was married and expecting her first child.

She had two children, and then her marriage ended. As a single mother in 1985, she began a career as a U.S. Army civil servant, doing administrative work for the Soldiers Support Institute. She was an Army civil servant for the rest of her life, working at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, from 1995 onward.

In addition to working for the soldiers in her job, Judy was constantly doing volunteer service for soldiers.

She was survived by her mother, her sister, her two brothers, her son, her daughter, and her six grandchildren.

Rest easy now; your journey's done.
Peace has found you at last.
You lived your life with all your heart
And did not look back with regret.
You fought a valiant fight,
Your courage an example to us all.
With kind words and gentle thoughts,
We'll remember you.
Sleep well knowing you are loved.
