Thomas was born in Water Orton, a village near the River Tame in the North Warwickshire borough of Warwickshire in England. It is located between Castle Bromwich and Coleshill and borders the West Midlands metropolitan county boundary to the north, west and south

He emigrated to New Zealand on the 'INDIAN QUEEN' that left Liverpool 1 Nov 1856 and arrived in Wellington 30 Jan 1857.

He lived for a time in Ohariu Valley (6km north west of Johnsonville, Wellington) then moved to Woodville about 1879 and ran the Central Hotel

A brilliant ancestor/descendant chart with a detailed bio on his life is at:

He married twice, his first wife, Mary Ann Lea (nee Stringer) was a young widow with 2 children, Violet and Lizzie. They married in 1856 then sailed to New Zealand the following month.
They had twin boys on Petone Beach soon after landing.
They had twin daughters not long later and then another 5 children
