He served in the Russian Army in 1880. He married Mathilda Kreeger in Russia. They immigrated to the United States on April 30, 1887, arriving in New York on the ship Aller.
Karl and Mathilda settled on a farm in Hutchinson County, South Dakota. Their first daughter, Maria was born on October 30, 1887. She died a year later. Their second daughter, Anna was born on May 15, 1889 at Hutchinson County, South Dakota.
On Aug. 31, 1890, their third daughter Mathilda was born. Mathilda (Mother) died that day from complication of childbirth. Mathilda (baby) died at eight months old on May 13, 1891.
Karl married Theressa Hildebrandt on Nov. 22, 1890 at Eigenfeld, Hutchinson, South Dakota. They had ten children.
Karl is survived by his wife, Theressa; eight daughters, Anna (Nelson) Rash, Louisa (Ralph) Whittington, Emma (Frederick) Fitzner, Otilla (William) Rutherford, Theressa Helen (William) Cutler, Hulda (John) Adam, Edith (Ralph) Dykeman and Martha (Robert) Mawhinney; and two sons, Edward and Albert Hauf.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mathilda; two daughters, Marie and Mathilda Hauf; a son, Gahardt Hauf; and his parents, Johann Georg and Marie Hauf.
