Mrs. Mary Merrill, 78, widow of the late Harry Merrill, former Calumet County farmer, died Thursday at St. Mary Home for the Aged in Manitowoc. She had been a resident of the home two years.
The former Mary Diedrich, she was born at Stockbridge, Calumet County, April 9, 1880, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Diedrich. She attended St. Mary Catholic School there and was married to Mr. Merrill in St. Mary Church.
Following marriage the couple farmed in the town of Chilton until Mr. Merrill's death in 1937. She had lived in Chilton prior to going to the Manitowoc home. Mrs. Merrill was a member of the Christian Mothers Society of St. Augustine Parish, Chilton.
Surviving are two sons, Joseph of Oshkosh and Frank of Waukegan, Ill.; four daughters, Mrs. Gilbert (Lucille) Bowe of Brothertown; Sister Mary Nicola of the Holy Family Convent at Silver Lake near Manitowoc; Mrs. Arthur (Margaret) Joas of Kiel; and Mrs. Orville (Winifred) Puetz of South Milwaukee; 21 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She also leaves three brothers, Christ Diedrich of Stockbridge; William of Kloten, Calumet County; and Joseph of Chilton.
Two daughters, Miss Marie and Mrs. Isadore (Catherine) Hoerth, preceded her in death.
Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Chilton, following 9 o'clock family rites at the Erbe-Hoffmann Funeral Home. Celebrant of the requiem mass will be the Rev. Roland Ahearn, pastor.
Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Stockbridge.
