*Note: His name is John Fruit NOT John James Fruit. All documents and sources such as land indentures, court records census records his will and his headstone document his name as John Fruit NOT John James Fruit, there is NO document or source ever found that references his name as John James. Some family trees and some of his children's memorials here in Find a Grave have incorrectly recorded his name as John James, again this is not correct, John has no known middle name and it is irresponsible to add an undocumented middle name.

John Fruit was born in November of 1738 in Pennsylvania, he was baptized on 18 November, 1738, he is the son of of James Fruit and Girzel Walker-Fruit. John married Elizabeth Pugh the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Pugh circa 1755/6 in, Liberty, Randolph, North Carolina.

Seven children were born to this union:

1. John Fruit Jr. died 5 Dec 1798, unmarried, buried next to his parents.
2. Sibilla Fruit m. John Husband, son of Herman Husband the leader of the Regulators.
3. James Samuel Fruit m Martha Clark
4. Elizabeth Fruit m Joab Harmon
5. Girzel "Grace" Fruit m Levi Branson
6. Peninah Fruit m William Fegan
7. Thomas Fruit m Ruth Esther Lane

In February of 1765 a record shows John Fruit and wife Elizabeth take in Hannah Beverley who later is cared for by John's parents James & Girzel Fruit, who named her in their will Hannah Beverly, was the daughter of John and Margaret Beverly who died leaving orphan children "Hannah Beverly, born Oct 17, 1750 and wants to stay with John Fruit and his wife until she is 16 Years old and they agree to find her Sufficient Meat drink and Apparel & Teach her to sew." Hannah Beverly's brother John Beverly was taken in by Herman Husband (the leader of the regulators).

John was a NC Regulator, in May 1768 he and his cousin William Walker, his father-in-law Thomas Pugh, and several of his brothers-in-law, namely James Pugh, John Pugh, Enoch Pugh and Jesse Pugh signed the Regulator Advertisement #9.

* 11 March 1771 John was Indicted as a regulator for assault during the Hillsborough Riot of 1770. Later that same year in 1771, one hundred twenty seven residents of Orange County signed a petition for pardon on John's behalf, John Fruit was ultimately pardoned by Governor Tryon.

On 24 April, 1773 John and his wife Eliabeth were witness to the will of Samuel Walker, John's uncle.

John is found on the 1779 tax list for Randolph North Carolina showing 20 Acres improved 30 unimproved 50 total, 16 cattle, 5 horses 5 pounds money on hand total 2265.

John's wife Elizabeth died in 1783, John never remarried.

John is found in the 1790, Randolph North Carolina census.

John Fruit made his will on 25 June 1818, probated August Term of 1824, in his will he named his living children and appointed his cousin Samuel Walker Jr. as sole executor.

John died 12 May, 1824 and is buried next to his wife Elizabeth and his son John Fruit Jr. Also, in the same family burial plot John's in-laws Thomas and Elizabeth Pugh and their son James Pugh and his wife Jane Patterson-Pugh
