JOHN GRINNEN
WAMPUM—John Grinnen, 75, of Wampum RD 1, was found dead at his home at 3 p.m. on Monday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.
Deputy Coroner, P.O. Contrucci said that death was suicide, and that Mr. Grinnen had been ill and despondent.
He was born in Wampum on Sept. 8, 1900 to the late Richard and Sarah Bartle Grinnen. He was retired from the Ellwood Works of the U. S. Steel Corp., where he was an inspector for 23 years.
Mr. Grinnen was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge of Ellwood City; the White Eagle Society of Chewton, and was a well known baseball player in his youth. He was an army veteran of World War I.
He is survived by his wife, the former Elsie Cunningham, to whom he was married for 53 years; five daughters, Mrs. George (Ethel) Harper and Mrs. James (Judy) Butera, both of Wampum RD 2, Mrs. Walter (Jean) Kirkwood of Wampum, Mrs. Edward (Hazel) Yahn of Harrisville, Pa , and Mrs. Norma (Linda) Dornbeck of Belaire, Md.; six sons, James, Robert, and Jerry, all three of Wampum RD 2, Ralph, and Walter of Wampum, and Lynn of Wampum RD 1, a sister, Mrs. Blanche Grace of Struthers, Ohio; 34 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, John in 1971; four brothers and three sisters.
Friends will be received at the Robert S. Marshall Funeral Home, Main Street, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday. The service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, at the funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Charles Shaffer of the Wampum United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Clinton Cemetery.
