William Nelson Peyton Jr. was born the son of William Nelson Peyton Sr. and Leora Ellen Porter. They are buried this cemetery. William Jr. married Donna Lea DeGrief on June 1, 1952 in Winthrop, Iowa. After his death Donna remarried but is buried beside her husband under the name of Christensen. ~0bit~ Independence-William Nelson Peyton Jr., 27, of 1507 Sixth Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids, was killed about 10 p.m. Tuesday when a car plunged into the Wapsipinion River here. Buchanan County Coroner John F. Loeck said Peyton was trapped in the car and drowned. A companion, Clifford Troxel, 26, of Vinton was reported in serious condiion at an Independence hospital Wednesday noon. The extint of his injuries was not immediately determined. Funeral services for Peyton will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Swanson Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be in the Troy Mills Cemetery. Authorites said the driver of the car has not been determined. They expected to be able to question Troxel Wednesday afternoon. The car was registered in Peyton's name. Deputy Sheriff Merle Graham said the Peyton car was north bound at the time of the crash. The car grazed the bridge, plunged 30 feet into the river, bounced and then landed on its side. Troxel was apparently thrown out of the car as it plunged into the water, officers said. Following the crash, a baby car seat was sound floating in the water and it was thought there might be a baby in the wreckage. Later it was learned Peyton and Troxel were the only two persons in the car. Three fireman, Don Anderson, Paul Ballou and Harry Strine, helping remove Peyton's body from the wreckage, fell into the icy water and were pulled out. Peyton had lived in Cedar Rapids for five yers. He and Troxel were employed by Wilson and Company in Cedar Rapids. William Nelson Peyton Jr. was born September 16, 1928 at Troy Mills, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Nelson Peyton Sr. He was a veteran of World War II. He married Donna Lea DeGrief of Winthrop on June 1, 1952 in Winthrop. Prior to living in Cedar Rapids, he resided in Independence for several years. He was killed on February 7, 1956 in Independence. He was preceded in death by his mother, Leora Ellen (Porter) Peyton when he was two years old. Survivors include his parents; his wife, a son Gregory Alan Peyton, at home, and five half-sister, Rose Moyer and Sherry Meade, both of Cedar Rapids; Betty Tutwiler, Verna Peyton and Goldie Peyton, all of Independence. He is buried Troy Mills, Iowa.
