Jacob Swafford was born February 21, 1798, in Randolph Co., NC, the son of William and Ellender (Tripp) Swafford, of North Carolina and Scotch and Irish descent.
Jacob came to Indiana, in 1826, and entered land in Dudley Twp., Henry Co., IN, where they built a cabin and began making a farm. He was one of the most prominent of the early settlers and was honored with many local offices of trust. He was Magistrate for fifteen consecutive years, and for several years held the office of Town Assessor and Deputy County Assessor. He was politically affiliated with the Whig Party. Also, he was an active member of the Christian Church. He accumulated a large property, and when his children grew to maturity was able to assist them in beginning life for themselves.
