Fitting Tribute z paid To Memory Old Resident

Last rites were held Monday afternoon for Mrs. O. M. Christian, one of Gonzales County's oldest residents, who died at her home at Denton Creek at 6:30 that morning. She was 94 years, 3 months and 2 days of age at the time of her death and had been a resident of this county for 68 years.
Services were conducted in her home at Denton Creek by the Rev. K. C. Minter, pastor of the First Methodist church here, and interment was in the a flower decked grave in the Odd Fellows cemetery. Attending services, to pay a final tribute to the memory of one they loved and admired, were many scores of friends and loved ones, including a number from distant points.
Mrs. Christian had been in failing health for several years due to her advanced years. She had been a member of the Methodist church for 80 years and was devoted to her church, exemplifying the life of a Christian as a wife and mother and as a neighbor and friend. She was held in the highest esteem by all who knew her, and many were the pretty floral tributes that were sent to grace her last resting place. Among the special floral pieces was a casket piece of hot house flowers from her children with the word Mother" inscribed in gold letters.
Mrs. Christian was a daughter of two early residents of this section, Mr. and Mrs. William Green. She was born in Arkansas, but came to Texas with her parents when only five years old, the family settling first in Bastrop county. Despite her young age when she made the hazardous trip to Texas across country in a covered wagon, Mrs. Christian could recall several stirring incidents of the trip. One was when the family was crossing the Red River, the team of horses pulling the wagon balked in mid-stream and the river was rising rapidly because of heavy rains. The balky team was unhitched and another team hitched to the wagon and it was pulled out of the water just as the wagon started washing downstream.
Mrs. Christian was married to Obed Mast Christian on March 22, 1860, Rev. Farrell, an old time Methodist circuit rider performing the ceremony. Mr. Christian preceded her in death in 1913. Twelve children were born to this union one of whom died in infancy. The eleven surviving are: L. G. Christian, Houston; L. F.Christian, Gonzales; Mrs Mattie Wright, Lockhart; z Mrs. H. C. Mangum, Denton Creek; Mrs. Mary E.Cobb, Gonzales; Mrs. Lauren Martin, Carona, N. M.; Mrs. Sarah D. Reese, Austin; Mrs. Hannah Philips, Los Angeles; Mrs. Elsie _____, El Paso; Mrs. Barney Garnar, California. Se also leaves many other relatives in this section.
